THE STORY<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

During the last Glacial Period, a family of sharp minded belugas left the<\/strong> North and<\/strong> went on<\/strong> a vacation to the Saguenay fjord in Quebec, Canada.<\/strong>
Unfortunately, they missed the boat back home.<\/strong> And got stuck.<\/strong>
They are still there, a few descendants\u2026 happily swimming in a tiny gene pool.<\/strong>
They\u2019re not doing so great.<\/strong>

The belugas population of Saguenay has been declining by about 1% per year since the early 2000s. There are now between 1’530 and 2’180 belugas in the St. Lawrence and they are currently listed under Species at Risk Act (SARA) as endangered. Fortunately, recovery of the population is considered feasible.

60% of the project benefits will be donated to GREMM, the Group for Research and Education on Marine Mammals.
